Motorists are should carry out a series of simple checks to cut down the chances of their vehicle failing an MOT test say the DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency).

The latest MOT testing data for Great Britain shows that around 40% of cars fail their MOT at the first attempt.

The common causes of MOT failures are faulty light bulbs, tyre condition, tyre pressures and mirrors, wipers and washers.

Figures show that 30% of all failure faults relate to lighting and signalling, 10% to tyre condition and pressure and 8.5% concern the "driver’s view of the road" caused by problems with mirrors, wipers and washers.
